I was excited to find out recently that my city now will accept all plastics 1-7 as long as it is numbered in the recycle bin. They used to only take 1 & 2 numbered plastics- so this was great news. (I used to get bugged every time it was a different number.) Hooray! More going to the recycle bin!
OK, here is the truth. I have not been very green for most of my life. The closest I can get to it is that I grew up using a compost pile and semi-helping my Dad in the garden, but even then, it seemed halfhearted. Fortunately, when T came, along came questions about things like diapers (cloth vs. disposable) and the type of plastics in bottles and toys and it got me thinking about my environmental impact as a whole. I started digging up info on what could be recycled around here. I became a little more aware about how much water I use, what am I putting in and on my body, and started analyzing what my approach will be.
Anyway, so I was happy for a few days about the recent change by the city. But now I get bugged that so much plastic is unnumbered! If I am in the mood I say..... "Hello, plastic. How are you? A lot of people want to recycle you, but you are unnumbered. Instead I am throwing you into the trash. Say hello to your mother for me." (Lots of
SNL for me lately). If I want to be really depressing I could say: "Say hello to my great-granddaughter for me." I just feel bummed out.
And here is where I lead into the title of my post. I wouldn't want to be a politician, like, EVER, but if I was, my platform would include some serious "payday loan" reform (don't get me started) and insistence that every plastic was marked for recycling. I am not kidding. Who do I talk to about this?
Please don't think that I am promoting myself as an example of
eco-friendliness. I still have a long way to go to get to where I feel I should be. Little steps. (A little shout out for Costco at this point. I have noticed that they are slowly stocking more and more organic or
eco friendly products lately and it is really nice and
convenient for me to try them out. Although.... I DO miss the genetically modified corn. That stuff was
wayyyy better than what they have now). But back to the topic on hand, it's just that it drives me a little crazy to try to do something for the environment and instead be thwarted.
Bleeaahhkk.
