Baby K is officially one week old today. Knock on wood, he is a good, good baby so far-a great sleeper, very mellow, super snuggly.
I wanted to record a little of the birth experience before I forget. Week 39 of my pregnancy was misery at it's finest. I was getting so swollen, my ankles disappeared for awhile. When I would walk, I felt like I was walking on glass. So when I went to my last appointment and the doc said I was still at a 1 and 70% effaced I broke down. Part because I had really hoped that I would go into labor on my own. Having T was a really terrible labor and I feared being induced again. The other part was just ready to move on and quit being pregnant.
When my Dr. asked me what I wanted to do, schedule a induction or wait another week and see what happens I couldn't decide and did the most embarrassing thing instead. I cried. I couldn't help it. Once they were there they kept flowing. My poor Dr. handled it well. (I guess dealing with preggo women all day gives you a great deal of patience).
I agonized over it all that night and the next day, a Thursday, I decided to go ahead and have the baby on Friday. Misery overruled the fear. Friday morning about 4:30 am I woke up and noticed that I was contracting regularly so I got up to time them. They were about 5 minutes apart but not too bad. We went in at about 7:50 for the induction. When I was checked this time, I was at a 4+ and 80% effaced. I was so happy! (I guess baby K just needed me to make the appointment so he could decide to come anyway.) Labor was four hours from the time my water was broken and in two pushes, he was out. It was so different from T and so much better.
Baby K cried while he was getting cleaned up but was very sleepy and mellow during the rest of his stay at the hospital. Apparently, a baby that sleepy is bad because he didn't want to eat that often and lost a lot of weight. He started at 8 lbs. 4 oz. and dropped down to 7 lbs. 7 oz. at his lowest. He also developed jaundice. Our doctor's office has seen us three times in the last five days to monitor his levels. They finally dropped today (hooray) so we can quit taking him in so frequently, until next Friday at least, and no longer need to have his heel pricked. The doctor's office said to just keep feeding him as often as possible.
It's a little weird to have a baby that is so small though. T was quickly a big cheeked, fat rolls on legs baby. K is a chicken legged little thing. In a weird way it makes him look like an old man. That and his ability to look very serious all the time- he has some crazy deep wrinkles on his forehead!
I wish I was one of those women to whom nursing is easy and I envy those who can do it without severe pain from the inability to get a consistent good latch. Today I switched to just pumping to give my body a chance to heal a little before trying again. I pumped exclusively for about 10 months with T and I really would like to not do that again. A pump is a godsend though. I don't want to associate pain with feeding K and resent him for making my life miserable every few hours. This time around I feel like I have more support and knowledge so I'm optimistic that we will make it through to a happy place.
